No particular reason.

I'm posting this for no real reason. Just so that you smile at least once today. I know it's been a horrible few days for most of us. My husband took this photo at the playground recently. Our two sons kept going down the slide like this. It made us laugh so hard —  still does.

25 Days

We're doing our own advent calendar again this year (and when I say "we" I mean crazy "me"). This is our own "25 Days of Christmas" — where under each number is a riddle or rhyme to find a special treat or something special to do relating to the holiday season.

Last year's began with 'The Snowman' by Raymond Briggs that Santa left: "Under your pillow you should look. Santa left you a special book." The second day was to pick out a xmas tree. I won't bore you with the entire 25 but a couple more were things like "Donate toys to other little boys." And we donated unused toys to Cradles to Crayons. "For the birds make, a nutty suet cake." I left everything out on the table to make a suet cake which we hung outside afterward. And "Cookies you will bake. A smile you will make." The gift found in their stockings for that morning were chef hats and after baking cookies we brought them to a local elderly home. You get the idea.

Now I'm well aware these aren't genius rhymes people. It's for my 3 and 5 year olds, who really think that Santa's in cahoots with Frosty and Rudolph and they're all leaving them special messages every morning. They're not going to believe in magic for very long so I'm playing into it now while I can.

Uh-Oh Holidays

The holidays are here. I can no longer deny it. I need to start concepting this year's holiday card. Here's last year's—gotta love cardboard boxes!

Eight shoots, one day!

The Two Birds 'Holiday Card' Fundraiser

The crew and the volunteers arrive. They don't know the families, the bidders. They don't know the children who'll receive warm clothes because they donated their time and talent. But yet, they walk through the door and leave their personal lives outside the studio. They volunteer for one reason: the kids.

It's all about the kids—the children arriving with their parents to be photographed and the children who will receive coats and clothes, the ones who will be able to play in the snow this winter in winter clothes, not spring clothes.

So I thank you. I thank you if you shared a post about the fundraiser. I thank you if you bid and lost. I thank you if you bid and won. I thank you if you volunteered the first, second or third year. I thank you if you volunteered all three.

It's not an easy day. It's eight professional shoots in less than six hours. The stylists lay clothes out for the kids with as much effort as they do for a big client. They make the kids feel like rockstars. The hair and make up artists give the children a glow and a sense of confidence—they make the kids feel special. The volunteers snatch the kids up in their arms and play with them like they've known them for years. That amazes me. Every year. No one spends time on their phone. No one is reading the newspaper. Every person in the studio is present — fully present. It's a unique day.

I love that one little girl kicked her parents out of the shoot because she was having so much fun and wanted all the attention. I love that I got to meet Chickie. I love the emails from parents weeks later telling me their children are still talking about the photo shoot. I love that 7 families have been repeat customers. I love that the children sit on my lap and take pictures of their family with my camera. I love the little boy who tickled me to death. I love when I receive the families' holiday cards in the mail. I love the five adopted vietnamese children that made me stand up and dance my heart out. And I love that we raised $3050 this year.

I am changed by this project. Unexpectedly, forever changed. I am full of joy and gratitude.

Pop!

I'm guessing that even after Hurricane Sandy there might still be a few bubbles on this hill from Saturday's shoot. Great crew, great models, great weather, great fun! More to come.

Whoa!

So I stole my friend's teenage daughter yesterday for a quick test shoot. Just me and her. One hour. And holy smokes — I think it's safe to say that every boy in her high school knows she exists. Plus, not only is she beautiful, she's as sharp as a tack. Whoa!

Beautiful.

I was lucky to spend a beautiful Autumn day with some beautiful teenagers. They were both so glad I didn't make them jump in the pond like I did to the poor little girl I shot the weekend before. Happy Monday!

Hunter's Moon

Working with Fitness Magazine recently has inspired me to shoot more grown-ups. It'll be tough but I promise not to zerbert anyone.

Two Birds 2012

This is not just a photographer putting your child in a chair and taking their picture. Not even close!

It's a wardrobe stylist having cool clothes ready when your child arrives, letting them play dress-up and be silly. It's a hair and make-up artist ready to curl, straighten or tease your child's hair and then put a glow in their cheeks. And then you've got a photographer whose energy rivals a 3 year old's ready with her camera.

Here's a clear picture of what you get:

Autumn

Go ahead and get bored with me all you want. I know I repeat myself with every season but this really is the most wonderful time of the year! And just so you know, this photo was not retouched. These colors are absolutely true to the actual leaves.

Field trip.

So I threw myself on a bus yesterday for a field trip to Shelburne Farm to go apple picking with my son's preschool. Well there was definitely a lot of picking going on — and I don't mean just the apples. (refer to the first pic please)

I'll apologize in advance for posting so many pics. I usually don't but I just couldn't resist these cute little dirty, happy faces. Some of these photos are with my mark iii and some with my iphone. Hopefully you can tell the difference. We weren't there long but it was long enough to tire the little ones out!

Happy Autumn everyone. Have a wonderful Columbus Day weekend!
